What does the Qur'an say?
- Surah Al-Baqarah (2:246–248)
The Israelites ask their prophet (unnamed in Qur'anic text, identified traditionally as Samuel): "Appoint for us a king that we may fight in the cause of Allah." He warns them, then announces Talut (Saul) as king.
